The Frequency – Piezo Bender Fundamentals
Ever wonder how a flat disc can make a loud beep? It all starts here — with a Piezo Bender.
A piezo bender consists of a metal plate, typically brass, with a ceramic disk on one or both sides. This ceramic material allows piezo benders to convert between electrical signals and mechanical deformation.
Every piezo bender has a natural resonant frequency — the point where its vibration is strongest. In most cases, it’s optimal to operate the bender at its resonant frequency.
Depending on their construction and the applied signal, piezo elements can produce haptic feedback, audible tones, or ultrasonic waves. For now, we will focus on benders that produce audible tones.
You’ll find piezo benders everywhere — in smoke detectors, toys, timers, and other devices that need simple, reliable sound.
From a simple flat disc to devices all around us — piezo benders are where vibration begins.
